The work-in-progress code for Firefox with VA-API acceleration on Wayland can be found via this Mozilla bug report. The focus is on Intel video acceleration with VA-API but ultimately should end up working ideally with other VA-API driver implementations too. Hopefully this work will see the light of day in upstream Firefox soon. 55 Comments
Firefox will likely be more energy-efficient in video playback on Linux with Wayland than Chromium (and its friends). There are two ways to do video decoding (conversion of compressed video stream downloaded from internet into pixels displayed on the screen): in software on general-purpose hardware and in dedicated hardware. Software decoding uses general-purpose hardware and can be slower and more battery-draining than dedicated hardware developed exactly for this task.
Nov 13, 2010 · Now the Hardware acceleration option is still ticked on from the options menu, but the font is normal now with the direct2d string set to True. But I don't see anything else that was set differently from either having Hardware acceleration setting On or Off. For example the gfx.3d_video.enabled is still set to False with HA on or off.
Another hardware acceleration strategy is in-memory processing, an architecture that places multiple processors as close as possible to memory arrays. com and founded the site in 2004 with a focus on enriching the Linux hardware experience. That's because Chrome / Chromium (Firefox too but there's no way to force this) doesn't support hardware accelerated video decoding on Linux. On my laptop, the Chromium CPU usage without hardware acceleration goes way higher. The patch to add VA-API support to Chromium on Linux...
Apr 23, 2020 · Saying “it works on Linux” is weird, and not really accurate. I hate to be the “Linux is a kernel” guy, but different Linux desktops run different display servers: either Xorg and Wayland, and many of these things work on one and not the other. On the desktop, both seems to be common, though it varies a lot.

The CPU and GPU usage are too noisy for me to be certain, but I don't really think so. Also, Wayland support is awful these days. UPDATE: yes, it uses around 40% CPU with software decoding on 1080p60 and 20% with hardware acceleration. The main process uses an extra 20% on top of that.

Hardware acceleration still runs software. H.264 isn't 'amazing' because of the hardware acceleration built into everything, its extremely convenient. If OGG was built into everything, we'd be using that instead because thats what would allow us to have long battery life and lower heat dissipation.
I wanted to enable hardware video acceleration in Firefox via VA-API to lower CPU utilization by following the Arch wiki guide and applying the corresponding tweaks. All of my trials were in vain but here is what I did: Installed drivers:
Another important news for Linux users is that Firefox 75 on Wayland now has full WebGL support (some bits of info and links from Phoronix), as well as H.264 VA-API decode (powered by FFmpeg). Mozilla has also finished implementing VP9 VA-API hardware decoding using FFmpeg for Firefox on Wayland, but this didn't make it into Firefox 75.

In some situations, depending on certain graphic card setups, Firefox might get into a freeze loop when hardware acceleration is in use, this is why we’re recommending this workaround.
That said, vendors are preferring the use of hardware acceleration due to its advantages (battery life, less heating of the CPU, etc). This is why H.264 is the preferred codec by many vendors if/when they can use it. Remember tohugh that H.264 video codec use isn’t a guarantee for availability of hardware acceleration.
